INNOVATION AT WORK
Need an extra $110 million?
An upcoming Defense Depart-
ment-sponsored competition will pro-
vide the awardee up to $110 million
in federal funds to launch an Institute
for Manufacturing Innovation (IMI).
This newest competition is focused on
photonics, the science and engineer-
ing of applications of light.
The Integrated Photonics IMI is the
fourth DoD-led IMI to be announced
since the pilot project was launched
two years ago.
In photonics, light is used to capture
and display images, convert energy and
transmit, store and process information.
Integrated photonics is an important
innovation that reduces the size of
On Oct. 1, Barbara Morrison, CAE, IOM,
was installed as the new president of the
Association for Manufacturing Excellence
(AME). Her appointment followed a four-
month search to replace Paul Kuchuris
after he announced his retirement.
Today, Morrison looks forward to helping
AME continue to grow and brings a
wealth of leadership experience in asso-
ciation management with organizations
such as the International Association
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the
Air Movement and Control Association
International, the American Association
of Neurological Surgeons, the National
Association of Neonatal Nurses and the
American Industrial Hygiene Association.
“I am excited about this opportunity to
help AME grow, and I’m looking forward to
working with the staff and membership to
provide opportunities in professional devel-
opment and networking,” said Morrison.
Morrison brings to her role as AME
president strong experience in strategic
planning, program development and
implementation, budgeting and staff
development. She also will be crucial
in helping AME grow its membership
and reach within the manufacturing
industry. She also brings experience
in the manufacturing area having
worked in both the steel industry and
engine manufacturing companies prior
to her association management roles.
Additionally, she has managed her
own business consulting firm for both
for-profit and not-for-profit clients.
Morrison’s educational background
includes a Master of Business Admin-
istration degree from Almeda University
and is a certified association executive
(American Society of Association Exec-
utives) and holds a certification from the
Institutes for Organization Management
(Stanford and UCLA).
The search to fill Kuchuris’ role was
led by the AME search committee,
which included Dale Gehring, Leif
Kristensen, Jenny Snow-Boscolo,
Keith Syberg, Greg Williams and Jerry
“I am very grateful for the hard work
and due diligence from the search
committee and thankful for Paul
Kuchuris’ help during my time transition-
ing into this role,” said Morrison. “Paul
has led the association in its growth and
recognition during that time.”

components, reduces the power used and
improves reliability. Photonics is capable
of carrying vast quantities of data.
The DoD will collect proposals from
teams of private companies, nonprofit
organizations and universities to head the
institute. The $110 million available over
five years must be matched by at least
$110 million in nonfederal commitments.
The award for the Integrated Photonics
IMI will be announced early next sum-
mer, and the institute will have five years
to become self-sustaining.
The pilot IMI announced in August 2012
focuses on 3-D printing. Branded as
“America Makes,” this Youngstown,
Ohio-based institute is a consortium
of more than 100 manufacturing firms,
universities, community colleges and
The next two institutes announced in
early 2014 were a broad consortium of
businesses and universities with a hub in
Detroit that focuses on lightweight and
modern metals manufacturing and a con-
sortium focusing on digital manufacturing
and design innovation technologies.
The newest integrated photonics IMI
will focus on developing an end-to-end
photonics ecosystem in the United States,
including domestic foundry access,
integrated design tools, automated pack-
aging, assembly and test and workforce
